Expectations –The Absurd and the Feasible

Yes. We’re all familiar with expectations. Everyone has them, everyone’s seen them before. For now, let’s look at them a bit more in detail. There are three different kinds – ones that are ridiculously high, ones that are doable, and ones that we could surpass without effort. Out of these three, the ones that give people the most trouble are the ones that stray between the border of reality and chaos.

At least once, you’ll see someone who assumes your capabilities are greater than they truly are. Maybe this is your insane math teacher that gives out impossible tests and expects you to be able to maintain an average of at least 99%. Perhaps it’s your parents, who want you to become a surgeon despite the fact that you have hemophobia. It’s even possible that the one with high standards is none other than yourself, stressing out over your latest 10 point essay.

So, what would most people do if and when this happens to them? Let’s look the situation with the teacher first. If asked, the average person would probably reply “I’d get really mad at that teacher and request a change in classes from my counselor.” Now, consider what you probably would do. Although there would be much whining, not that many people would probably take action. Why? Because most people don’t have the nerve to tell the teacher outright that they couldn’t teach someone how to open a file on Windows XP, let alone teach their class geometry. The idea of a teacher holding a grudge against you is simply too intimidating for most people.

If a teacher holding a grudge against you is that powerful, the thought of having a close person dislike you even slightly is just as, if not even more stressful. Telling your dad “I’m sorry, but there’s no way I can be the perfect prosecutor you’ve always wanted me to be. It’s all just too boring. I’m going to be a stunt person,” is pretty bad, but they’re also your parents. They’ll probably understand, unless they’ve been manipulating you for the past ten years. Not to mention, it would really suck if you were stuck at law school thinking about skydiving.

Thinking about all of this, isn’t it clear why most people hold their tongue and suffer instead of going and doing something about it? Well, if you really need it clarified, let me spell a few out.

A. They’re scared.

As mentioned in the example with the teacher, there are negative side effects to trying that people might not consider worth the risk.

B. They don’t want to hurt the other person’s feelings.

Imagine you had a good girlfriend/boyfriend. Unfortunately, you both disagree on where to live. Do you really want to deny them a life in the city that they’ve grown familiar with?

C. They don’t want to admit that they can’t do it.

Try putting yourself in this situation – You’ve spent your entire summer training to make the cross country team. Guess what, you made it in. Congratulations. The coach announces that you will be training by running 5 miles nonstop every day. Even though you’ve been training all summer, you’re not that great at running. You know you’ll fail and be dropped, but you don’t say anything. Just because you don’t want to admit your entire summer’s been a waste.

D. Other.

What? You can't seriously expect me to list everything here. It's long enough as it is, and I can't think up every situation that exists

Either way, it's time for this old man to end his ranting.

the 'oh no' situation

So, what happens when you're a failure? What happens when you're in a sort of "Fiasco" ? You handle the situation, correct? Or do you run from it. Many times you realize that holy crud, I completely forgot that today my final project is due. You think "this is the end of my life" or worse "I am going to die right now". But really, is it that bad?

You spend your life, or at least I do, getting ready for something. You're given the instructions not to screw up, and when you do, you're not sure you're going to make it. In fact, all you can think about is what's going to happen when such-and-such finds out, or how you'll be punished. What I want to know is why is it that no one thinks ahead of that?

I find that when you're in a bad situation, the best thing to do is to think the words 'there will always be a tomorrow'. Because, unless the world's ending, there really will be a tomorrow. Sure, things seem bad, but eventually there will be some sort of good thing. Or at least I hope there will be. When you realize that final project is due, or that you're forgotten what's happened the night before, the only thing I can tell you is take a breath and remember there will always be a tomorrow. Say it in your head, and then face your consequences full on. Fight back, reason, compromise- do what you have to do.

Do not in under any circumstance, decide to kill yourself with a knife attached to a bike.*

Burn Your Life Down

What to do… what to do…

Too often, it seems like I don’t know what to do. I could easily make a list of one hundred different things I could be doing. Yet here I am, imagining that I’m talking to someone who cares, when I’m really talking to myself, who doesn’t really care.

Apparently, no obviously, I have no direction in my life at the moment, not even as far as a few days, hours, and maybe minutes. It’s a sad thought, when life is all hazy. You don’t know what to do when you’re you just feel trapped and intoxicated. The world seems to whiz right by you. Ha, sounds a lot like I’m high doesn’t it?

Those are the times you waste, the times you burn your life down. The times when you could get off your sorry ass and do that something useful are the times when you should get off your sorry ass and do something useful. We all wait for that one thing, anything really. As long as that thing gives us something to look forward to, something to strive for, we wait for it. We whine and bi***, but it’s so hard to really try and accomplish it, to make it true. Stop playing Guitar Hero and start playing a real guitar. Stop sitting in your room playing your guitar and do something with it. Stop lip-syncing(for those who care, I can't stop watching 2:00 - 3:00) and start singing. Stop singing to yourself and sing to others. Stop dreaming and get that persons number. You can make up the rest for yourself, a unique list that fits only on you.

I hate to sound like a nihilist(I am not a nihilist, however), but what’s the point? You’ll never get good at it, you’ll never actually do that, that will never happen, they’d never go out with you, etc. It seems like negativity is instilled into our brains. The parameters of convention are forced upon you, and there you sit, waiting and dreaming of what could, or perhaps should, have been. Imagine if you didn’t just sit here. Well, dream that you weren’t, that you were out there doing something. Imagine the possibilities; life could be so much more. To some like me, it's a sad and scary thought that we ourselves can( not necessarily will) do a whole mess of crap for ourselves.

Even with all that happening around us, we still need time to ourselves. Times we want to be alone with out thoughts. Times to think, plan out, dream, imagine, and wonder. Extroverts and introverts aren't people who talk a lot, or don't talk at all. Introverts can talk as much, or more, then extroverts. They just need to left alone every now and then, maybe a lot. It doesn't mean they don't enjoy being around people (at least most people).

just wanted to get that out.

i just keep writing the same thing, just with different words

Finer Feelings

Have you ever stopped and tried to appreciate everything around for you? Just for a few seconds maybe? Sometimes it can be difficult to do. Still, everyone should do it every now and then. Just imagine, your job just plain sucks. Your co-workers are terrible, and the pay doesn't match the workload. Yet, I'm sure you can think of a million other jobs that could be much worse. Perhaps your parents are treating you "unfairly". At least they provide shelter and food to you. They really do love (at least, they're supposed to) you, since during the course of your life they've probably spent hundreds of thousands of dollars raising you, maybe more. Imagine what would happen if they kept all that money, maybe they'd be living some adventurously fun, exciting life, carefree.

Still, guess you have the right to whine every once in a while. Sometimes, it shocks me how unappreciative I am. What a hypocrite.

For those of you who love your job, your situation, wherever you're at at the moment, maybe living your dreams, then congrats. Most of the rest of the world is quite envious of you. Hope you can continue doing what you do best, and loving it. Also, for everyone else's sake, let's hope you can actually do your job well (they're are plenty out there who can't...). If they don't realize it, they're probably ignorant, or arrogant...Though, they'd probably go all crazy if you say it (say it ain't so, it's probably your fault, not mine, don't blame me....blahblah).

You Talk Way Too Much (i try to tell myself to shut up more......it has never really worked...)

I always laugh at this, so will you
That's a great show

on the subject of sparta....this is funny too

good ideas at certain times.

So.... I want to know what people want to read about. I take recommendations of any sort here.
I know, I know, another blog? What the hell, right? Oh well, I'll just go with this, since it seemed like a good idea at the time (AKA now).

So this leads to my other topic of the day; 'It seemed like a good idea at the time'.

I've always found myself in a situation where certain elements come into play. It's called the "very-tempting-but-probably-will-get-you-in-trouble" situation. I'm sure you've had that.

First, you're about to go somewhere you don't want to. You think, great, great, I'm just going to go home and blast some From First To Last in order to mope about the world and how Sonny Moore left the band.
BUT THEN, the tempting part comes into play.

I don't know how the hell you'd get tempted, but somehow you do, and you suddenly get this amazing plan that involves going to have fun without getting your parents mad at you. Or have them know. Who needs to tell them about it, right? pshhhh.

You go have fun; then you go home and you're grounded.

Yeah, the plan backfired. "It seemed like a good idea at the time"

So I know I sound like your grandma (and I don't know how they sound. Because for all I know they could yack in the Asian language.), but honestly, just stop and THINK. Unless your parents are incredibly evil, they'll give into your begging and you won't get much but a lecture. Right?

There are other situations, too. Think school! But I don't really want to think about school, so I'll let your own imagination run wild.

I'm just saying, that if anything, think. Just think about you (the one in your head you), and think about what will happen if you do such-and-such or whatever. Next thing you know you'll be stuck in jail thinking and wondering how the hell you ended up there.

remember, what goes around comes around.
